How to Brief

Cleo Ngiam
We looked at Alison Farone as an example of how to incorporate a subject and questions into this style of communication. This shows how using the basic CMYK colours makes a visually aesthetic, vibrant object. Making it something that is interactive in some way is quite important I think as I feel this will draw in the specific target audience.

Alison Farone
I like the rigid category structure that this presents, it clearly displays the information in a typeface that is loud and the use of uppercase made us consider whether we should do this also. I think the small information below the larger category titles is too small and for our project would not be appropriate.

Our next step is to explore our other ideas, how we can experiment them and adapt them to our target audience.

Behance had some really informative projects done previously that were aimed at the same sort of audience, we took inspiration from the typefaces and layouts. We came to the conclusion that our colour pallet needed to be simple and the typeface should be large and bold.

This helped us to visually see what final conclusions and visual specifics that we all preferred. We touched on smaller details such as deciding on a sans serif font and scale.

We came up with an idea at this stage that we should also include images of work from previous students, one piece from their first year and compare that with one piece from their third year. This could offer something reassuring to those students worrying about the standard of their work to show that everyone starts of at a lower level and improves over the three years at their own pace whilst developing their own style.

Here is an information booklet that we came across that we thought was a great layout, we liked that it was the size of a business card when compact and unfolded to something much better. I don't like the colours used here as I feel it is too busy and confusing. The grid format would go hand in hand with showing the comparison between the third years' work, this is something we need to experiment with further.

We researched some leaflets that were different from the standard fold, we need ours to look unique to stand out amongst hundreds of other flyers being handed out to students through the freshers period. I particularly like the triangle one i feel its dimensions are interesting and it looks professional yet exciting. I think the green one on the bottom is slightly uncomfortable with how each section is joined.

We composed an email between us to send to the third years to ask for their help and for images of two pieces of their work. After further discussing our ideas we decided we should also ask for a word of advice from them, there wouldn't be much point in us given the advice considering we don't have the experience so felt that this primary research would make it seem more realistic and helpful, as a false response to the question wouldn't be very beneficial.
It was at this point that we decided that the title on the envelope should not be self explanatory, we didn't want to give away the whole meaning behind the information leaflet so we decided that the phrase would be 'Speaking from experience.' We felt this was appropriate as we were taking into consideration our experience and the in-depth experience that the third years have shared with us.

The selection of work that the students sent to us showed a varied range of projects, however we were slightly concerned and surprised that their first year pieces of work were of a higher quality than we expected. When compared to their third year work we could still see a huge difference however so we decided to proceed with this idea.
